36th District Court Judge
William Burton, Jr. is currently in his first year as a 36th District Court Magistrate. Prior to being appointed Magistrate in 2023, he served for 18 years as a Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor in downtown Detroit. During his tenure in the Prosecutor’s Office, he developed a reputation as a fair Assistant Prosecutor, searching for the truth and seeking justice rather than just pursuing convictions.
Burton is the oldest son of working-class parents - the late William Burton, Sr., and Lettie Brooks Burton. He is a longtime Northwest Detroit homeowner and active in community affairs and HBCU (“Historically Black College and University”) alumni activities. He attended Detroit’s Gesu Catholic School prior to graduating from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. While in high school, he earned All- Catholic honors as a sprinter on the Track and Field team.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. While a student athlete at Fisk University, Burton was frequently on the Dean’s list and earned All-Conference Track and Field honors as the 100-meter champion for the NCAA Division III College Athletic Conference. After graduation from Fisk University, he attended and graduated from Washington and Lee University School of Law on scholarship in Lexington, Virginia.
Burton is a single family man who lives close by his Mother, sister and nieces in Detroit.
